Rapidus Selected by NEDO for “Post 5G Information and Communication Systems Infrastructure Enhancement R&D Project / Development of Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology (Commissioned)”
Tokyo, Japan, Nov. 11, 2022–Rapidus Corporation (Head Office: 4-1 Kojimachi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Atsuyoshi Koike), a company that researches, develops, designs, manufactures, and sells advanced logic semiconductors, announced that it has been selected by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) to participate in the “Post 5G Information and Communication Systems Infrastructure Enhancement R&D Project / Development of Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology (Commissioned).” The award was made based on the company’s proposal for “Research and Development of 2nm-generation semiconductor integration technology and short TAT manufacturing technology based on Japan-US collaboration.”
Through this research and development commissioned by NEDO, Rapidus will promote development of 2nm generation semiconductors and establish mass production technology (short TAT manufacturing technology based on a new manufacturing process) in Japan in cooperation with IBM and others through strategic international collaboration. After completion of the commissioned research, we intend to commercialize the company as a domestic foundry featuring short TAT production to secure the domestic supply of advanced logic semiconductors. These semiconductors are key to economic security and to strengthening Japan’s industrial competitiveness.
In establishing Rapidus, eight Japanese companies– Kioxia Corporation, Sony Group Corporation, SoftBank Corp., Denso Corporation, Toyota Motor Corporation, NEC Corporation, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation, and MUFG Bank, Ltd., have endorsed the company’s strategy as well as its business plans, and have agreed to invest a total of 7.3 billion yen in the company.
Atsuyoshi Koike, President and CEO, said, “We are extremely excited and grateful that our proposal has been selected for the Post 5G Information and Communication Systems Infrastructure Enhancement R&D Project / Development of Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology (Commissioned).
Utilizing our knowledge and experience, we will do our utmost to promote Japanese manufacturing that contributes to the global semiconductor business.”
